The Simonian bounded rationality hypothesis and the expectation formation mechanism

چکیده
In the 1980s and at beginning of the 1990s the debate on expectation formation mechanism was dominated by the rational expectation hypothesis. Later on, more interest was directed towards alternative approaches to expectations analysis, mainly based on the bounded rationality paradigm introduced earlier by Herbert A. Simon. The bounded rationality approach is used here to describe the way expectations might be formed by different agents. Furthermore, three main hypotheses, namely adaptive, rational and bounded ones are being compared and used to indicate why time lags in economic policy prevail and are variable.

A simonian ontology of the artificial world
The first edition of The Sciences of the Artificial will be forty years in 2009. In this book Herbert Simon (1916-2001) gives the most complete panorama of his man-made world vision. This world can be first described as a set of artefacts, which are the things created by Humans to satisfy their needs. Simon stands that their creation is an outcome of a specific activity he calls design. Therefo...
متن کاملB - 454 What is Bounded Rationality ? Paper prepared for the Dahlem Conference 1999
The paper deals with bounded rationality understood in the tradition of H.A. Simon. Fundamental problems and theoretical issues are discussed. Special emphasis is put on aspiration adaptation theory. Further remarks concern basic models of decision behavior (like learning and expectation formation), reasoning, and the connection between bounded rationality and motivation.
متن کاملRethinking Rationality
This chapter discusses the concept of bounded rationality as it is understood in the tradition of H.A. Simon. Fundamental problems and theoretical issues are presented, with special emphasis on aspiration adaptation theory. Further remarks concern basic modes of decision behavior (like learning and expectation formation), reasoning, and the connection between bounded rationality and motivation.
متن کاملBounded Rationality, Abstraction, and Hierarchical Decision-Making: An Information-Theoretic Optimality Principle
ion and hierarchical information processing are hallmarks of human and animal intelligence underlying the unrivaled flexibility of behavior in biological systems. Achieving such flexibility in artificial systems is challenging, even with more and more computational power. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that abstraction and hierarchical information processing might in fact be the consequenc...
متن کاملA Non-Bayesian Approach to (Un)Bounded Rationality
Can one define and test the hypothesis of (un)bounded rationality in stochastic choice tasks without endorsing Bayesianism? Similar to the state specificity of assets, we rely on state-specific goal formation. In a given choice task, the list of state-specific goal levels is optimal if one cannot increase the goal level for one state without having to decrease that for other states. We show tha...
